Beginning June 25th, the suspension bridge’s iconic steel towers and cables will be illuminated in an array of colors, symbolizing unity, diversity, and inclusiveness. The “Rainbow Bridge” initiative is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to promote equality and acceptance. It coincides with the annual San Francisco Pride celebration, which commemorates the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. “The Golden Gate Bridge is a global symbol of San Francisco and a beacon of hope for millions of people,” said Mayor London Breed. “By illuminating it in rainbow colors, we send a clear message that our city is a place where all are welcome and celebrated.” The project required extensive planning and engineering. The bridge’s lighting system, originally designed for navigational purposes, has been modified to accommodate the vibrant display. Over 25,000 LED lights will be used to create the stunning rainbow effect. “We are honored to be part of this historic transformation,” said Nadia El-Nashar, General Manager of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. “The Rainbow Bridge will be a powerful reminder of the power of unity and our commitment to creating an inclusive community.” The illumination will take place every night from sunset to midnight from June 25th to July 3rd. Visitors are encouraged to view the display from various vantage points along the waterfront, including the Presidio, Marina Green, and Embarcadero. The Rainbow Bridge has sparked excitement and anticipation among San Franciscans and tourists alike. It promises to be a breathtaking spectacle that celebrates the diversity and spirit of the city.
