Oakland City Council Approves Plan for New Affordable Housing ComplexOakland City Council Approves Plan for New Affordable Housing Complex In a significant step to address Oakland’s chronic housing shortage, the City Council has unanimously approved a plan for a new affordable housing complex in the city’s Fruitvale neighborhood. The new development, named “The Commons,” will provide 112 affordable housing units for low-income families and individuals. The units will range in size from one to three bedrooms, and the majority will be reserved for households earning less than 50% of the area median income. The complex will also feature amenities such as a community room, a computer lab, and a playground. It will be located on a vacant lot adjacent to the Fruitvale BART station, providing residents with convenient access to public transportation. “This project is a critical step in our efforts to create more affordable housing in Oakland,” said Mayor Libby Schaaf. “Every resident deserves a safe and stable place to call home, and we are committed to working together to make that a reality for all.” The development of The Commons is the result of a partnership between the city, the Oakland Housing Authority, and the nonprofit developer Eden Housing. Eden Housing has a long history of creating affordable housing in Oakland and across the Bay Area. “We are thrilled to be able to bring this much-needed housing to the Fruitvale neighborhood,” said Eden Housing CEO Linda Mandolini. “The Commons will provide a safe and affordable place to live for families and individuals who are struggling to find housing in Oakland.” The approval of The Commons comes at a time when Oakland is experiencing a severe housing crisis. Housing costs have skyrocketed in recent years, making it increasingly difficult for low-income residents to find affordable housing. According to the city’s 2023 Housing Element Update, Oakland has a need for over 27,000 additional affordable housing units. The city has set a goal of creating 6,000 new affordable housing units by 2031. The development of The Commons is a significant step towards achieving this goal. It is expected to be completed in 2025.
