These adorable flightless birds will join the aquarium’s existing penguin colony, bringing the total number to four. Humboldt penguins are native to the coastal regions of Peru and Chile. They are known for their distinctive black and white plumage and curious personalities. Penelope and Ferdinand were rescued from a Peruvian zoo where they were unable to be released back into the wild. “We are thrilled to welcome Penelope and Ferdinand to our penguin family,” said Aquarium Director Elizabeth Johnson. “They have quickly become fan favorites, and we can’t wait for our guests to meet them.” The penguins have been undergoing a quarantine period to ensure their health and well-being. Once they are cleared, they will be introduced to the public in the aquarium’s penguin exhibit. In addition to their captivating appearance, Humboldt penguins also play an important role in their ecosystem. They are excellent swimmers and divers, feeding on small fish, squid, and krill. Their conservation status is considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and climate change. The Albuquerque Aquarium is committed to animal welfare and conservation. By providing a safe and enriching environment for these penguins, the aquarium hopes to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these amazing creatures and their habitat. Visitors to the aquarium can expect to see Penelope and Ferdinand waddling, swimming, and interacting with their fellow penguins. The exhibit also features interactive displays where guests can learn more about these fascinating birds and the challenges they face in the wild.
